Home Staging Tips for Sellers in Portland OR: Don't Show THIS... but DO Show THAT

If you're selling your home in the Portland Oregon metro area, here are some home staging tips to help reduce market time!

Presenting the rooms in your home in their best possible condition is critically important so that buyers are attracted to your home's best features and architectural details.

Here are some Before & After photos of actual homes our company has staged;  all of these homes were occupied by the sellers while the home was on the market ~ and we worked with the sellers' own furnishings to keep expenses at a minimum.  With our expert home staging advice & services, our clients' Portland-area homes have sold in an average 31 days this year (compared to the Portland average Days on Market of 147!)

Remember, for a quick sale don't show THIS ...                        But DO show THAT ...

In the living room above, the first thing buyers would see are too many family photos on the fireplace mantle, and the two animal heads -- much too distracting when your home is for sale.  In the "after" photo, buyers now see an inviting place to enjoy family and friends.  We also removed the brass fireplace surround to update the look of this room.

In the example above, the kitchen has too many personal photos on the refrigerator and the wall;  by setting up the homeowner's console table in this area with a dining-related theme, buyers can now imagine how they'd use this space.

In the above photo, the first thing buyers would see in the living room is a large pool table dominating the space.  We advised the sellers that buyers expect a formal living room in a 3-story home like this one, and we made a comfortable conversation area here.  Now buyers walk in and notice the lovely view from this room instead of wondering if their furniture might fit.

In the living room above, there were too many toys visible when you entered this home, and the furniture wasn't balanced.  We repositioned the furniture and rehung the sellers' lovely art collection ... now the home feels peaceful and much more spacious.

You after photos are very good -- and make a huge difference --- yes, always get rid of the animal heads.

Posted by Benjamin Realty LLC almost 3 years ago

Bob & Carolin ~ Oh the animal heads -- they never make a home look inviting, do they?  Such a simple change but sometimes we meet resistance.  Glad you agree and are such great supporters of staging here on A/R.

I like the title!  don't, but do!  I DO love your afters!  And, of course I love your work!

A refreshing twist using "don't do that" instead of "before and after" for your photos.  I had a job with a pool table in the dining room, I can totally relate!  Great job on all the examples.

Great before & afters Maureen! I love working with occupied homes and using what the homeowner all ready has. It's challenging and fun to show them what we can do with their own belongings.

Maureen-I loved the twist on "Before & After".  It's excellent marketing material for your consumers, and they can see through your photos that it doesn't have to be a big expense.

Especially love the first one.  Just dealt with this (times 100!) on a recent listing!

Karen ~ Glad to hear you approve....soemthing a little different for a change.  Thanks for your support!

Sharon ~ It's amazing where we find pool tables isn't it?  If your home is for sale they should either be packed away or shown in a room specially built for them....otherwise they just take up too much space.

Donna ~ Me too -- and I've heard several others here on A/R say they love the hunt for hidden treasures.

Kathy ~ Keeping our clients' expenses down is always our goal.  Thanks for your feedback.

Kim ~ Those animal heads are too scary for some -- and too controversial for others, when selling.  They have to be packed away.  Glad you could relate.

Eeeek!  Animals heads.  Is there anything more disturbing to buyers than that?

Posted by Wendy Carroll almost 3 years ago

Wendy ~ I'm with you 100% on the animal heads - yikes!  Some sellers have told me they think buyers will "like" them.  Maybe it's a macho thing?

I love these "don't" and "do" shots and explanations, Maureen.  Removing the brass fireplace surrounds makes such a huge difference, doesn't it.  Your work is great testimony to the value of professional home staging!

Beautiful work Maureen! This is a great way to show sellers and Realtors that Stagers can use the furniture they already have to make a dramatic difference in the way their home shows.

Wow, absolutely gorgeous.  You have such a great eye.  I'm sure all your clients are so thankful they hired you when your done.  Great work, as always.

Mary ~ Thanks -- that brass fireplace "frame" just slipped out very easily.  Instant update (seems no one in our area wants to see brass any more).

Annie ~ Working with what is already there is challenging, but so rewarding when the sellers are happy -- and the home sells quickly!  Thanks for your nice comment.

Chrissie ~ Many thanks for your positive feedback.  I'm thankful too!

Kathy ~ (this series is fun but almost like doing homework!) -- thanks for the feature.

Great examples Maureen with great stats to back them up!  Its always so much fun to see the sellers thrilled with changes you made using their own furnishings.

Posted by Michele Hess, Home Stager Rockford - Simply Staged Inc (Simply Staged Inc.) almost 3 years ago

Great post Maureen, Ya know those dead animal heads just didn't do w/ that style of furnishings did it??? Every after photo is such a huge improvement than the before, well done! I know the sellers were thrilled too.

Posted by Cynthia Bartch ~ Redesigned Spaces ~ all round nice gal... (Home Stager/Property Stylist & more! Granville, Ohio) almost 3 years ago

Michele ~ It's true the sellers are usually happy -- and surprised -- at how we change things around.  The "reveal" is the most fun part of the job!

Cynthia ~ I still can't believe it when I see animal heads, especially in a home other than a log cabin LOL
