Don't Forget to Stage the Patio ~ we Staged this one for HGTV's "My First Place"
Sellers, remember that when your home is on the market, all outdoor spaces have the potential to expand your "living space" ~ and you need to "show" buyers how the outdoor spaces can be used.
Our company was selected to provide patio furnishings for a young first-time homebuying couple in Portland Oregon for an episode of HGTV's hit show "My First Place" that was aired today (it will be aired again on April 12th -- check your local listings for air time).
Our goal was to provide this cute young couple with fun, colorful patio furniture that they wanted, to expand the actual living space of their small bungalow. During our interview before filming, we determined that they wanted a table & chairs, two loungers for sunning, and a barbeque and refrigerator for entertaining their friends. Here are some Before & After photos of our project ...
Here is the space we were given to work with ... a small concrete patio off the kitchen. (The budget was for furnishings only, no repairs or updates.)

Our goal was to add color, flowers, and a dining set along with a barbeque (this one had a built-in refrigerator for keeping drinks cold) and a pair of lounge chairs ~ to add "life" to this small patio area.

Here's a photo of Jeff and Jocelyn, the young couple in front of their first place ~ they seemed pretty happy with their housewarming gift from HGTV!

Maureen.....how fun to do something like this for a "first home"!! Thanks for all your help last night too!!!
Maureen, How cool! You not only Staged it, you did a knock out job! It must have been a blast doing it and hope you get lots of business from people seeing your amazing work!
What a difference the staging makes, Maureen! This looks really great!
That is soo cool Maureen, you lucky girl, you...love the little lanterns under the umbrella.
Maureen,
Congratulations on a great Staging job! I love the blue and green...very fun. Congratulations also on being selected for the show on HGTV.
Here we go again: selling lifestyle instead of boards and paint and concrete. Shocking.
Hi Maureen -- I applaud your performance, girl! I have a situation currently where the home owner thinks this will help, but the outdoors sits RIGHT on the interstate and is quite noisy. I noticed none of her neighbors on either side have anything out on their patios either. My thought is that it would be better not to highlight the patio in this case.
What an inviting place to spend the afternoon. Well done Maureen!
Lucky couple! I think those bright colors are just right for their age, too! Julie
AWESOME, and I know that you had a blast doing it...
How fresh, bright and cheery-love the colored lanterns!! WOW!! What fun!
Thanks everyone for your comments ... the show's producers required that we use "a lot of color" so that it would show up well on TV, and we also had to please the homeowners and stay on budget (and do the job under cover of secrecy until closing). It was really fun to find the items they'd requested and to put it all together. (While we were working on putting the patio together, the mother of one of the homeowners was painting the inside to make that look great for them -- that wasn't shown in the episode but I'm sure it made for an even happier outcome for them.)
Maureen,
How adorable. I love the pop of colors you used. Bravo!
Beautiful! What a wonderful space you have created and I love the colors!
Awwwww - I love it! The colors were just the right combo to jazz it up and make it look vibrant. Fantastic job!
Maureen, I could definitely see myself in that space and I bet this couple loves it too. Perfect COOL colors plus all of the details. Which episode?
Great colors on the patio furniture and the flowers tie it all together. Great job!
Wow, what an honor to do something like that. Great job. I love the fun colors. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty big difference between those two pictures. Great job, as usual. I love the colors used. That looks like an impressive grill too!
Ginger ~ This episode is titled "Rookie Buyers Attempt to Broker Their Own Deal" and will be repeated on April 12th.
Maureen - What a wonderful staging job you did with that patio. Love the colors! I'm going to make sure I catch the HGTV episode on April 12th.
Congratulations Maureen! Looks like you gave them exactly what they wanted...you go girl!
Wow. How cool. I love what you did. On a side note - I lalways thought HGTV had staff do all the set-ups for their house warming gifts. Congrats.
Judy ~ LOL -- a "staff" to do the setting up? Not really ... just the local designer/stager. No carpenters, painters, handymen, cleaners, or anyone else to help ...
Glad that you like how it came out!
Congratulations Maureen. The patio looks fantastic!!!
Maureen- It's always hard to try to please someone else when staging or redesigning a home. Add to that a budget and television constraints, and wow, what a beautiful job you did. The color helps to make it a very inviting patio area. Bring on the lemonade!
Maureen, Just back from Florida - Makes me miss it, Love it Love it Love it!!
Great job Maureen. What a fun thing to be a part of!!
Maureen, Very nice. It looks so much better, showing how it can be used and those are nice pieces.
I liked how you used flowers along with the furniture as that's what gets the attention, so you don't notice the underlying patio.
This turned out really nice Maureen. The colors are very fun. I've still got the episode on my TIVO. Hope to see it soon!
